Psalm 31:14 (NLT). But I am trusting you, O Lord, saying “You are my God!”
My six years old son’s neck strained to the side like a giraffe’s neck as his eyes attempted to catch a glimpse of my sharp, gold scissors. Moments ago, he complained that the tag behind his shirt bothered him. Like a determined surgeon, I extracted the tag carefully.
After the tag was removed, I asked my son, “Did you trust me to cut the tag for you?” He smiled and said, “Yes, because you are my mommy.” My son’s response led me to ask myself if I would respond in the same way. Would I trust God during hardship and say “Yes, because you are my God?”
In Psalm 31, David was struggling as he shared with God how his enemies were tormenting him. He mentioned that even his friends were not helping David. However, David demonstrated full trust in God by naming his characteristics. In verse 3, David said that God is “my rock and my fortress.” In verse 5, David also called God “faithful.” Throughout Psalm 31, David expressed how God was his “protection.”
Since David believed in God’s character, he was able to trust him. “But I am trusting you, O Lord, saying, “You are my God!” (Psalm 31:14). My son trusted me to cut the tag on his shirt. He experienced the characteristics of me being a trusting mom. He saw how I took care of him, protected him and loved him. David experienced God’s character and faithfulness throughout his life. David knew he can depend on God. He trusted in who God was.
During the most difficult times of my life, I experienced God’s faithfulness as He brought peace to my soul through His Word. God also brought other believers in my life to encourage me. One example was when I experienced a second trimester miscarriage. It was one of the most devastating experiences of my life. However, God held me close through his Word and personal encouragements which revealed to me more of who God is. God is a loving, faithful, and compassionate God. David, my son, and I were able to trust because of who we trusted in.
